JUNE 30, 2002: Well, folks, say goodbye to Keiko Masuda, and say hello to Mrs. Keiko Kuwaki! Yup! Kei-chan's gotten hitched! William White from Asian Music Underground wrote to tell me that on Wednesday, June 26th, Kei married an old sweetheart whom, according to info Bill heard on a news program in Japan he had watched (and translated on the fly!) that day, had met about 20 years ago. The couple dated for a time, but broke up, he later got married and just got a divorce this past year. It seems that Kei had loved her beau for all those years and after his divorce, they got back together again, and the rest, as they say, was history. Proof positive that true love is worth waiting for, no matter how long it takes. It was also mentioned that Kei is also a great cook! Now, I've never mentioned this before, but I've always been rather fond of Kei, so I'm elated that she's gotten married, and I wish her nothing but happiness for the rest of her life. If I should happen across any wedding photos of the blushing bride and her husband, I'll be sure to show them off for everyone! GOOD LUCK TO YOU, KEI-CHAN!!!!!
JULY 20, 2002: What do the following have in common: Jerry Springer, My Mother the Car, the XFL, The Brady Bunch Hour, Hogan's Heroes, Celebrity Boxing, AfterMASH, Cop Rock, You're in the Picture, Hee Haw Honeys, The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer, Hello Larry, Twenty-One, Baby Bob, Manimal, The Chevy Chase Show, Casablanca, The Ugliest Girl in Town, The PTL Club, The Pruitts Of Southampton, Baywatch, The Powers of Matthew Star, Sammy and Company, One of the Boys, Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire, Life With Lucy, Turn-On, Supertrain, Howard Stern, Unhappily Ever After, Homeboys in Outer Space, Co-Ed Fever, Holmes and Yoyo, Alexander the Great. These were the first 34 of 50 shows deemed to be the worst ever programs in the history of American television, as voted on by the editors of TV Guide which was published in their July 20th edition. The significance of this list is that Pink Lady & Jeff came in 35th, meaning that despite what critics have always said about the show, there was far worse on the air, both before it, and after it. And I have only one word to properly describe this moment:
VINDICATION!!!!
For us, as fans of Pink Lady, that list proves beyond any shadow of doubt that PL & J wasn't the unholy disaster seemingly everyone in the entertainment industry said it was, especially when you take into consideration that four of the shows mentioned above (Springer, Celebrity Boxing, Baby Bob, Howard Stern) are still on the air today! As I've said many times before, PL & J wasn't must see TV, far from it, and sure, it was said to have been the final nail in the coffin of the then dying comedy-variety show genre, but, regardless of all that, the show had a delightfully clumsy and goofy charm all its own, thanks to Mie, Kei and yes, Jeff Altman, so it was hardly the prime-time nightmare people painted it out to be. I mean, given a choice, I'd sooner watch a bikini-clad Mie and Kei in the hot tub over of the trash listed above any day of the week! So, stand tall and feel proud, people! We've finally been vindicated!
SEPTEMBER 1, 2002: As promised back in June when I first reported the news of Kei-chan's marriage, I've finally got ahold of some pics! Thanks to fellow fan Lady-X from Arizona who sent me a tape of the news report on Kei's wedding, and the related press conference. Although the item only ran for a minute and a half, I managed to get some still shots to post so everyone could see Mrs. Kuwaki! Enjoy!
